Populate - AJAX Chained Select Boxes With Mysql

Jan 25, 2010

I am trying to build a form that has two select boxes. The first select box is for the main category and the second is for the sub-category. I have set up the form to use ajax to populate the sub-category select box based on the selection of the category. Problem is that right now I am just hard coding in the category in HTML and the sub category look up is just a php page that looks like this"

<?php
//†List†of†Items†for†Income
if†($_GET['ch']†==†'Income')†{
?>
<select†name="itemList">
<option†value="Wages">Wages†&†Tips</option>
<option†value="Interest†Income">Interest†Income</option>
<option†value="Dividens">Dividens</option>
[Code]....

The ajax simply replaces the contents of txtResult. What I want to do is use mysql to populate both select boxes† - and to have the php code† so that I don't need to know the hard coded value of the category. (I assume that will have somthing to do with table relations?)

Auto-populating Select Boxes Using JQuery And Ajax - Not Working In Anything Newer Than 1.3.2

Mar 1, 2011

I have been going through this tutorial on auto-populating boxes using jQuery and Ajax:
http://remysharp.com/2007/01/20/auto-populating-select-boxes-using-jquery-ajax/

and in the demo the author is running jQuery version 1.2.3. Locally I managed to get the function running on jQuery 1.3.2. but running it on any version above that one is not working (the second box is not populating).

Here is the jQuery code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
$(function(){
$("select#ctlJob").change(function(){
$.getJSON("/select.php",{id: $(this).val(), ajax: 'true'}, function(j){
var options = '';
for (var i = 0; i < j.length; i++) {
options += '<option value="' + j[i].optionValue + '">' + j[i].optionDisplay + '</option>';
}
$("select#ctlPerson").html(options);
})
})
})
</script>

This is the HTML code:

<form action="/select_demo.php">
<label for="ctlJob">Job Function:</label>
<select name="id" id="ctlJob">
<option value="1">Managers</option>
<option value="2">Team Leaders</option>
<option value="3">Developers</option>
</select>
<noscript>
<input type="submit" name="action" value="Load Individuals" />
</noscript>
<label for="ctlPerson">Individual:</label>
<select name="person_id" id="ctlPerson">
<option value="1">Mark P</option>
<option value="2">Andy Y</option>
<option value="3">Richard B</option>
</select>
<input type="submit" name="action" value="Book" />
</form>

This is the server-side PHP:

<?php
if ($_GET['id'] == 1) {
echo <<<HERE_DOC
[ {optionValue: 0, optionDisplay: 'Mark'}, {optionValue:1, optionDisplay: 'Andy'}, {optionValue:2, optionDisplay: 'Richard'}]
HERE_DOC;
} else if ($_GET['id'] == 2) {
echo <<<HERE_DOC
[{optionValue:10, optionDisplay: 'Remy'}, {optionValue:11, optionDisplay: 'Arif'}, {optionValue:12, optionDisplay: 'JC'}]
HERE_DOC;
} else if ($_GET['id'] == 3) {
echo <<<HERE_DOC
[{optionValue:20, optionDisplay: 'Aidan'}, {optionValue:21, optionDisplay:'Russell'}]
HERE_DOC;
}?>

How do I rewrite this function so it works with, for example, jQuery 1.5?

EDIT: Mark's solution worked, this is the HTML file with everything in it, and it should be relatively easy to adapt it to read a saved json file.

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"></script>

var data = [

{optionValue: 0,optionDisplay: 'Mark'},
{optionValue: 1,optionDisplay: 'Andy'},
{optionValue: 2,optionDisplay: 'Richard'}
],
[
{optionValue: 10,optionDisplay: 'Remy'},
{optionValue: 11,optionDisplay: 'Arif'},
{optionValue: 12, optionDisplay: 'JC'}
],
[
{optionValue: 20,optionDisplay: 'Aidan'},
{optionValue: 21,optionDisplay: 'Russell'}
]
];
$("#ctlJob").change(function() {
var $persons = $("#ctlPerson").empty();
$.each(data[$(this).val() - 1], function() {
$persons.append("<option value=" + this.optionValue + ">" + this.optionDisplay + "</option>");
});
});
})
</script>
</head>
<body>
<form action="/select_demo.php">
<label for="ctlJob">Job Function:</label>

Dependent Select Boxes With MySQL?

Jan 10, 2010

I want to do something that seems very simple but it's a bit hard to explain, so I'll just give you an example. Suppose you have a MySQL database with 2 tables -

Cars (id, name)
Models (id, name, car_id)

The models include a reference to the car they belong to. For example, if the table "Cars" has 2 rows - (1,Mercedes) and (2,Volkswagen), then an example for a model that belongs to Mercedes in the "Models" table would be (1,E-Class,1), the latter 1 being the id of Mercedes.

My problem is this: I want to have 2 select boxes, one representing the car and the other representing the model. But, the point is that when the user changes his car selection, the other select box changes automatically so as to include only models that belong to the selected car.

Jquery - Use Ajax To Create And Populate Div Elements?

Feb 2, 2010

I asked a similar question earlier here, and it got me down the right track, but I am little stumped still. However, now I know how to ask a more educated question. I have a database I connect to, with a table name of PRODUCTS. Within PRODUCTS are the columns ID, STOCK, SHORTNAME, DESCRIPTION, PRICE and SHIPPING.

If the user clicks a button, I need to send a request to find all the rows in PRODUCTS. I believe the following file.php accomplishes that (DB connect code not show).

$query = "SELECT `ID` FROM `PRODUCTS`";
$result = mysql_query($query) or die('Query failed:'.mysql_error());
$num=mysql_numrows($result);

When the user clicks the button, and it gets $num, it then needs to create as many div elements as there are rows. I can do this with for() , but I am not 100% sure how to do it. Also, I am not sure how to do this in Jquery, instead of just JS.

[Code]...

If a user clicks a specific div (#revealProductButton), how do I create as many divs as $num returns?
How do I make those divs that were created display STOCK, PRICE, and SHIPPING from the DB? Each div must display it's own information, not just one div that displays everything. If the user then clicks one of the divs that were created, how do I then reveal the rest of the information in the DB (DESCRIPTION, etc), but only for the div that was clicked? How to I write my file.php to work with all this?
