Calling Scripts From Javascript Without Leaving Current Page

I'm having some trouble calling PHP scripts from Javascript without leaving the current HTML page (if it is at all possible). I understand it is possible using AJAX, although is it possible using Javascript alone?

I want my page to perform a short animation using Javascript (using onclick), then immediately call a PHP script to insert data into a MySQL database - all without leaving the page so it does not inhibit the animation.

The animation part I can do and the inserting the data into the database, etc. but how can I call a PHP script at the end of that Javascript animation function?

Passing A Variable From A Page To A Javascript Page Via JQuery.ajax()

Basically, I'm calling a page (login.php) which checks to make sure the user is verified and the password matches up through my javascript (init.js). If it is, I echo "all-good" within the PHP page, which is passed back to init.js where it checks to see if "all-good" was echoed.

Obviously this is pretty insecure, so I was thinking of doing something like $verify_string = md5(uniqid($username)); within login.php, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to pass that variable back to init.js.

Here's what I'm doing now:

type: "POST",
url: "login.php", // Send the login info to this page
data: str,

Display Multiple Line File Contents In Javascript?

I have a page where onclick on a button displays the text content from the file in the text area on the page

javascript function
function displayOutput()
$logfile = "hello";

Using this function i am able to correctly display the file contents only if the file contains a single line.

I want to display multiple lines in the textarea. I tried removing $data = trim($theData) but then no output is seen. If i echo $theData i am able to see all the file contents but in a single line. I also tried using while(!feof(filename)) but even that didn't work.

How do i display all the contents of the file on a new line using javascript?

Jquery - Ajax And The Ampersand Conundrum - Share The Current Time Of The Current Track

I know that I should encodeURI any url passed to anything else, because I read this: [URL] I want to share the current time of the current track I am listening to. So I installed the excellent yoururls shortener. And I have a bit of code that puts all the bits together, and makes the following: track=2&time=967

As I don't want everyone seeing my private key, I have a little php file which takes the input, and appends the following, so it looks like this: [URL] So in the main page, I call the jquery of $("div.shorturl").load(loadall); It then does a little bit of CURL and then shortener returns a nice short URL.

Except... the URL which is shortened is always in the form of [URL] - anything after the ampersand is shortened. I have tried wrapping the whole URL in php's URLencode, I've wrapped the track=2&time=967 in both encodeURI and encodeURIComponent, I've evem tried wrapping the whole thing in one or both. And still, the & breaks it, even though I can see the submitted url looks like track=1%26time%3D5 at the end. If I paste this or even the "plain" version with the unencoded url either into the yoururls interface, or submit it to the yoururls via the api as a normal URL pasted into the location bar of the browser, again it works perfectly.

So it's not yoururls at fault, it seems like the url is being encoded properly, the only thing I can think of is CURL possibly? Now at this point you might be thinking "why not replace the & with a * and then convert it back again?". OK, so when the url is expanded, I get the values from

var track = $.getUrlVar('track');
var time = $.getUrlVar('time');

so I COULD lose the time var, then do a bit of finding on where the * is in track and then assume the rest of anything after * is the time, but it's a bit ugly, and more to the point, it's not really the correct way to do things.

JQuery In CodeIgniter, Inside The View Or In External Js File?

I'm developing web application using CodeIgniter. All this time, I put the custom js code to do fancy stuffs inside the view file. By doing this, I can use site_url() and base_url() function provided by CodeIgniter.

Today I want to separate all custom js code from view file into an external js file. Then it hit me, I cannot use site_url() and base_url() in the external js file. So, I had to move the js code back into view file.

I want to ask opinion, example, and best practice for this kind of problems. Do you put the custom js code inside the view, or in external js file? If you put it in external file, how do you get around the needs for site_url() and base_url() (beside of course put the absolute url that I want to avoid).

Include Inside Javascript (.js) File

I have a javascript file (.js file, not HTML file) containing several js functions. I want to call one of the PHP functions in a PHP file containing only several PHP function from within one of the js functions. Is that possible? Would I need to "include" the .php file containing the php function in the .js file? How would I do that?

For example, say I had a file called myLib.php containing a function called "myFunc" that takes two parameters (param1 and param2). Then I have a .js file containing a function called "myJsFunc". How would a call the myFunc (PHP) from within the myJsFunc (javascript function)? Wouldn't I need to include the PHP file somehow in the javascript/.js file?
